A Supra needs an engine. The mechanical side is usually the first concern. Do I need to tell the DVLA? These are sensible questions. The Short Version There are three areas we tell customers to think about before completing an engine swap. First, check whether the vehicle details recorded by the DVLA need changing. Second, speak to your insurer and explain exactly what engine is being fitted. Third, make sure the finished vehicle can meet the MOT requirements that apply to it, particularly the emissions rules. These are connected, but they are not the same thing. A V5C update does not guarantee that an insurer will accept the modification. It pays to deal with each issue separately. Updating The DVLA After An Engine Change The DVLA requires owners to update their V5C registration certificate when vehicle details change, including the engine, cylinder capacity and fuel type. For an engine number or cylinder capacity change, the DVLA also requires supporting evidence. That can include a receipt for the replacement engine showing its engine number and cylinder capacity, written evidence from the manufacturer, an inspection report prepared for insurance purposes, or qualifying written confirmation from a garage. If the engine size or fuel type changes, there may also be implications for vehicle tax. After receiving the change, the DVLA can confirm it or contact you if further evidence or an inspection is required. For most owners, the sensible approach is simple. Does An Engine Swap Need IVA? This is an area where older forum discussions can create confusion. A straightforward engine replacement does not automatically mean the car needs Individual Vehicle Approval. The current DVLA rules draw an important distinction between changes to vehicle details and structural modifications. If work involves altering the chassis, monocoque bodyshell or frame so that the vehicle's dimensions or appearance are changed from the manufacturer's specification, separate rules can apply. That is quite different from assuming every engine swap needs approval. If your project goes much further than replacing the engine and involves significant structural work, check the position with the DVLA before committing to the build. Tell Your Insurer Before The Car Goes Back On The Road This is one part of an engine swap we would never leave until the end. Speak to your insurer. An engine replacement may be considered a modification, particularly where the replacement changes the car's performance, engine capacity or original specification. A replacement of the same specification may be treated differently from fitting a completely different engine. Do not assume that means you can leave it undeclared. Give the insurer the engine code, capacity and relevant details of the work. Failure to disclose a significant modification can affect cover and may result in a claim being declined or a policy being treated as invalid, depending on the policy terms and circumstances. It is far better to find out before spending money on the conversion. For more unusual JDM builds, a specialist insurer familiar with imported and modified Japanese cars may be more suitable than a standard policy provider. Keep written confirmation of what you have declared and what the insurer has agreed to cover. What Happens At The MOT? An engine swap does not automatically mean you need an immediate MOT simply because the engine has changed. The finished car still has to meet the normal roadworthiness and emissions requirements that apply to it. There is an important detail here that is often oversimplified. For vehicles first used on or after 1 September 2002, a different engine is generally tested against the emissions requirements for the age of the vehicle. For an older vehicle first used before 1 September 2002, an older replacement engine can sometimes be tested against standards applicable to the engine instead. The rules contain further provisions for personal imports and some specialist vehicles, so it is worth checking the current MOT emissions inspection manual if you have an unusual import or conversion. This matters for JDM owners because the age of the replacement engine does not automatically dictate the emissions test. A workshop carrying out the conversion should also pay close attention to the complete emissions system. If we were preparing a swapped car for its first MOT after the work, we would want the emissions checked before test day rather than finding a fault at the testing station. What About ULEZ And Clean Air Zones? This needs treating separately from the MOT. Fitting a newer or cleaner engine does not automatically make an older vehicle compliant with ULEZ or another Clean Air Zone. Clean Air Zone charging is based on the emissions standard recognised for the vehicle and the information available to the relevant charging authority. For cars in English Class D Clean Air Zones, the minimum standards are generally Euro 4 for petrol vehicles and Euro 6 for diesel vehicles. You can check current English requirements through the official Clean Air Zone guidance. If you have changed an engine and believe the emissions information associated with your registration is no longer correct, do not simply assume the vehicle will be recognised as compliant. Mitsubishi Is Back In The UK, But Older Cars Still Need Specialist Support The Mitsubishi story in Britain has changed considerably over the past few years. In October 2021, Mitsubishi Motors in the UK became an aftersales only business. That position has now changed. Mitsubishi returned to UK vehicle sales in 2026 with the new Outlander PHEV and L200 Series 7. You can check current manufacturer support through Mitsubishi Motors in the UK.
